Well…enough about tires. I’ve finally taken a look at a few photos I’ve recently put together. Have a look.

Well, one more flat on the way out today. That makes 6.
Well….the score stands as such:
Jungo road: 5
Sandia the Subaru: Zilch
Two flat rear tires last night as I rolled up to the job site. One spare, a can of fix-a-flat, a bit of luck and I made it to town with about 5 minutes of air left in the fix-a-flat tire. I made it to Highway Tire, where the owner informed me of his $90 “to open the doors” charge for a normal day off. He was nice enough to give me enough free air to make it the 2 miles to, dare I say it, Wal Mart. Yes, thank god for Wal Mart – they’re open every day. An hour and a half, and $20 bucks later, I’m back on the road…
So I can do it all over again tomorrow.
Well, I’m on day 17 or so, and already 3 flat tires on my way to work! Curiously, each time has happened on the left rear tire…hmm. I know I’m not alone, as the rest of the rig crew has told me that two weeks ago, 8 of the guys got flat tires on their trucks. I can see tire remnants occasionally strewn alongside the gravel highway (along with numerous unfortunate bunny rabbits). Something in the rocks I guess. Full of sharp edges and points; even slowing down hasn’t seemed to help.
What’s annoying, is that my car is all-wheel drive. This means that (according to the experts), all 4 tires should have identical tread-ware, or your transmission can be jeopardized. So Les Schwab will not sell you a single tire to replace a flat one, if it’s irreparable (unless they sell it to you loose, and you install it yourself in the parking lot). That means, to treat your car with the respect it deserves, shelling out $400 bucks for 4 new tires – something I had hoped to avoid, (at least until I was through driving this tire-killing road). I’m hoping that the flat tire is only in need of a patch, so I can wait and spring for new tires when I’m done with the job – two weeks or so.
Well, looks like this afternoon I’ll be at my new favorite hangout….the Les Schwab waiting lounge! At least they have free popcorn, and last time I got a free, albeit plastic, travel mug.
Hope you all have better tire luck than me!
Cheers.
Well, its pretty warm around here….highs in the mid nineties…had a bit of lightning last night, and expect more tonight and tomorrow. I’m working the graveyard shift these days…from 11pm to 11am, so the weather’s just about right while I’m at work! The plus is that I get to see sunrises over the desert for a change (I’ve seen a lot of desert sunsets in the last 3 years), and a couple of moon sets to boot.
The last 4 miles of my trek to work involves driving along a dusty road blazed directly across a gentle slope which has been accruing silt for the last 10,000 years – which makes wonderful material for digging burrows – and hence is home to various wildlife, including the burrowing owl

(not as cute as the puppies below!). I’ve also managed to see a few antelope grazing nearby. They are clearly used to vehicles, as they were not frightened of my skidding-to-a-billowing-dust-cloud-stop, when I pulled over to get a better look – beautiful animals.
Lastly, I have included a photo of what the general countryside looks like around here, desolate but pretty.
Well, that’s all for now…more later when I’m not tired!
